About Martinez, CA

Martinez, California, was originally part of the Pinole Mexican land grant given to Ygnacio Martínez. To the east was Rancho Las Juntas, granted to Irishman William Welch in 1844. In 1847, Dr. Robert Semple began ferry service between Martinez and Benicia, which became the only Carquinez Strait crossing for many years. By 1849, the town was a key stop during the Gold Rush and was officially laid out and named after Martínez by Col. William M. Smith. Though it became the county seat in 1850, it didn’t incorporate as a city until 1876 due to low voter numbers.

John Muir, the famous naturalist, lived in Martinez from 1880 until his death in 1914, and is buried nearby. The Vicente Martinez Adobe, built in 1849 by Ygnacio’s son, still stands near the John Muir National Historic Site.
