About Pleasant Hill, CA

Pleasant Hill is a city in Contra Costa County, California, in the East Bay of the San Francisco Bay Area, with a 2020 population of 34,613. Incorporated in 1961, the city is home to College Park High School, Diablo Valley College, the Pleasant Hill Library, and the Pleasant Hill Recreation & Park District. Originally inhabited by the Bay Miwok people, the area developed along the San Ramon Valley Branch Line of the Southern Pacific in 1891, with early stops at Hookston and Sparkle (now near the Pleasant Hill BART station). Suburban development began in the 1920s after vineyards were removed and farmland subdivided. Monument Boulevard was named for the Soldiers Memorial Monument, built in 1927 to honor World War I veterans; it was moved to Boyd Road and Contra Costa Boulevard in 1954 to make way for State Route 21.
