About Davis, CA

Davis is the most populous city in Yolo County, California, located in the Sacramento Valley. As of 2020, it had about 66,850 residents, not counting the University of California, Davis students, which added over 40,000 more by 2023. Davis is known as the biking capital of America.

The land was originally home to Indigenous people of the Clovis culture, later replaced by the Patwin tribe. In the 1830s, the Patwin were displaced during the California genocide. Patwin burial sites have been found throughout Davis, including at the UC Davis Mondavi Center. The area developed from the Rancho Laguna de Santos Callé land grant. Jerome C. Davis, an early settler, helped shape the town, which became a Southern Pacific Railroad depot in 1868 and was named Davisville. The name was later shortened to Davis, and the city was officially incorporated in 1917.

The area was first inhabited by the Tongva people, including the Chowigna band, who lived there over 7,000 years ago. They used local wetlands and beaches as sources of food like fish and salt. Don Manuel Domínguez, a key figure in California history and owner of Rancho San Pedro, once owned land that includes present-day Redondo Beach.
