About San Lorenzo, CA

San Lorenzo, located in Alameda County, California, is an unincorporated community in the East Bay with a 2020 population of 29,581. Originally called Squattersville in 1851, it was later renamed. In 1944, the David D. Bohannon Company built San Lorenzo Village under a U.S. Navy contract, making it one of the first planned communities in the nation, with areas set aside for schools, churches, parks, and shopping centers. Bohannon’s “California method” of pre-cut construction was later used in other developments like Levittown, Pennsylvania.

Walter Temple was the son of Pliny Fisk Temple and Antonia Margarita Workman, and was born on Rancho La Merced, now part of Montebello. This area was near the original San Gabriel Mission, located by the San Gabriel River, historically called Rio de los Temblores (River of the Earthquakes), now known as the Rio Hondo.
