South San Francisco, often called “South City,” is located in San Mateo County on the San Francisco Peninsula. As of the 2020 census, it had a population of 66,105.

Before European settlers arrived, the area had been home to the Ramaytush people, a subgroup of the Ohlone, for over 5,000 years. Their village, Urebure, was near San Bruno Creek and visited by the Portolà expedition in 1769. Archaeological evidence from shell mounds on San Bruno Mountain shows that the area was used for both long-term living and seasonal hunting, especially for waterfowl along Colma Creek. One ancient village site, CA-SMA-299, still has remains recognized today along El Camino Real.
